Today our culture places a lot of emphasis on our physical well-being, our mental well-being, our relational well-being, and our spiritual well-being. Life is compartmentalized into areas that if we simply work on each section to the best of our ability, it will create a synergy that will force fulfillment into our lives. Its believed that if all these parts of our lives are operating at their best, we will be our best. THIS ISN’T TRUE!
It doesn’t matter if I’m in the best physical shape of my life, if my attitude and mental state is focused and on point, if my marriage and friendships are working at their peak, and if I attend every church gathering…my life will not be fulfilled. The ONLY way, the ONE way in which I can truly live is through THE ONE AND ONLY, JESUS CHRIST.
Sickness and disease can riddle a body…but God can prevail. Depression, anxiety, bi-polar, schizophrenia can cripple a mind…but God can prevail. Dysfunction, abuse, anger, jealousy, selfishness can ruin relationships…but God can prevail. People believe that saying the right thing, attending all church functions, and praying every morning are enough….that following these steps is all it takes.
Listen, your spiritual health is the pinnacle point for your life….it is where it ALL begins. It doesn’t matter how much exercise you do, how much therapy you participate in, how many friends you have, or how much church you attend…fulfillment does not come from your works.
Faith is your life-line….faith in Jesus brings you the greatest joy and a mere glimpse of the greatest love. Our culture mimics the Romans Paul talks about. If you look in the first chapter, Paul describes the Roman culture as
” Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-” (Romans 1:22-23, NKJV) “…being filled with unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful…” (Romans 1:29-31, NKJV)
Is it just me or is this prophetic to how we (specifically Americans) live today? Rome was the ultimate super-power. Their culture was the idol for all other nations….the precedent Rome set was acceptable. Romans dictated what was politically correct, which sounds a lot like America’s influence on our world today. In our pursuit to the top of the food chain, we grew in our self-righteousness. Our way is best, our ideals are best, our acceptance is the standard…where does this leave Christians? Better question, WHAT should this invoke in Christians? We should be living set-apart. Just because culture says so, doesn’t overthrow what Christ expects from His children.
Should we take care of ourselves….ABSOLUTELY! Should we care about the relationships in our lives….YES! But it doesn’t start with those things…your “spiritual well-being” is the MOST IMPORTANT. Christ is life giving and your foundation in Him will overflow into all areas of your life. Have faith in Him alone and the fulfillment you seek, along with the strength you will need along the way, is provided.
