I titled this post The Baby Madness because that’s what it is (for good and bad)! And mainly, the point in this post is the material aspect to “prepping for baby”. This phrase is seen ALL over my phone, emails, and even written in my calendar…haha. It’s crazy ALL THE THINGS that are recommended for babies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s super fun for me to plan the nursery because one of my secret passions is interior design, and to acquire all the cute things (shoes, shirts, onsies, wittle bitty pants, sockies, etc.). But man-oh-man, I had NO CLUE, as to ALL THE THINGS. For me, a self-identifying Type A person, it’s overwhelming! And registering has been such a push and pull for me (so was my wedding registry) because I over-think EVERYTHING. First of all, I feel super weird adding ALL THE THINGS to the list(s), it seems so excessive! BUT, I have resolved that issue by understanding that it’s simply a list of what we need (I guess!) and that I need to keep track of this ever growing list for our sanity. I don’t expect for all of it to be gifted to us, so I let that insecurity go, finally! Secondly, I can’t help but get so tickled thinking about ALL THE THINGS because the women in the Bible didn’t have anywhere near ALL THE THINGS and they raised children! I mean sheesh!…don’t they just need my breasts, some clothes, and a place to sleep?!
Baby prepping is a whole industry, and I totally understand the reason because it’s whole-brain consuming, all thoughts focused, life altering, and time manipulating period. The shear anticipation of this precious baby is an entire lifetime of emotion condensed into 9 months! It’s miraculous, inspiring, scary, exhilarating, and fun. Planning for our precious baby’s arrival is literally almost all I can think about. Even if it leaves me for a moment while I’m working, it snaps right back when I feel those kicks and movements (pure bliss). There has been a whole new world opened to me from reading articles about all natural everything (birth included), birth in itself (AHHHH), how to breastfeed, whether to homeschool or not, how to care for my pregnant body, caring for a newborn, technology to keep baby safe…..I mean this list could literally go on for the entire day! SO, yes I understand the reason for “Baby Prepping”. It’s just at some point, I would like to soak up the experience because just like everything else in life…this pregnancy is fleeting!!! Nesting, another infamous word for bringing home baby is so real. I’m completely focused on what projects are to be done prior to his arrival. Trying to keep it together and focused on only absolutes because just like the registry, the list is growing! It’s super fun, but maddening too :)!
Consignment sales are also apparently HUGE parts of becoming parents. Went to my first one last week and I have to say….not for me. Not because I don’t like used items, I mean heck one of my favorite things in life is to take old things and make a new purpose for them. But I’m telling you what….the line first of all made me crack the heck up! The reality that people are like clamoring to come to these big sales (and this one was a bigger one), was for some reason so funny to me!! They had bags, carts, tennis shoes on, fanny packs cinched tight, and were standing at attention in line as if they were about to embark on a huge mission that required all their life’s energy and focus. Made me laugh! Once the sale opened, people disbursed to what they valued most. Now don’t let me fool you, I did come with research, so I knew what would be a good deal or not, I even headed in the direction I wanted to capture first. And maybe it was this particular sale, but I didn’t find an insane cut in price for most things, so to me buying new was more valuable. I did score a good deal on a really nice jogging stroller, I learned from many resources that jogging strollers aren’t necessary to register for because there is a plethora of unwanted jogging strollers available for re-sale. So MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I am training for a couple more upcoming events, so we will see how those go…but now that I’ve been to one, it may just depend on my mood those days.
Anywho, I had to write about all this because I am one of those people that find hilarity in the everyday. The “baby industry” is truly maddening, and I’ve joined the all-consuming train. It’s just hard not to. But for those of you who will embark on this journey at some point, here are some tips:
- DON’T worry about the registry! Trust me, your baby will survive without the latest snot sucker-outer (you know the one the mom puts in her own mouth and sucks the snot out for them…DISGUSTING! And NO, I didn’t register for that.)
- Stay calm when you feel like you’re not prepping enough. There will always be that other pregnant lady that will have all her plans laid out within the first 3 months, she’ll know exactly what items to register for, have her birth plan perfectly thought out, and everything necessary (like photo shoots) will be scheduled way in advance. Just do you! Don’t worry if you haven’t been couponing for diapers since you found out you’re preggo, or if you still feel like wearing your pre-pregnancy clothes. Trust me, the baby will be sleeping in your room for months, so the nursery doesn’t HAVE to be perfectly done. You’ll get done what must be done, that’s just natural. Stay calm, carry on, and relish in the miracle that God is letting you experience real-time!
- Let unsolicited advice, go in one ear and OUT THE OTHER. Like I just said, JUST DO YOU! Everyone is different and that does apply to pregnancy, newborn baby care, and all the rest. Listen to your body and your doctor, and you will be A-OKAY! Also, if you don’t want to register for something, just don’t!
Whether you’re pregnant, adopting, or being blessed by other ways with a precious gift from God…it really is the most amazing time ever! I can only imagine what it will be like when I finally get to hold him. The chaos that ensues beforehand is truly fun, just be light-hearted about it and don’t allow yourself to be overwhelmed.
